The sign and calculation errors that quietly cost the most marks
Across B.Tech, BCA and BBA papers, the same handful of small mistakes account for more lost marks than any genuinely hard topic. Five are worth knowing by name.
- The minus sign that does not survive a bracket.
Expanding −(a − b) as −a − b instead of −a + b is the single most common algebra error we see, from class 9 to B.Tech. It hides well: the rest of the working can be correct, and the error sits in one line before spreading through everything after it.
- Carrying a rounded number instead of the exact one.
Rounding 1⁄3 to 0.33 partway through a calculation and continuing with the rounded figure costs marks in exactly the multi-step problems engineering maths and business statistics both favour. Keep fractions as fractions until the final line.
- Reading the question once instead of twice.
A working that is entirely correct for a question the student invented is still a wrong answer. The second read costs fifteen seconds and prevents a whole question’s marks being spent solving the wrong problem.
- Forgetting units, or letting them go inconsistent.
In an applied question, an answer with no unit — or mismatched units carried through the working — is marked incomplete even when every number is right. Write the unit at every step, not only at the end.
- Trusting a calculator over your own working.
A calculator confidently returns the wrong answer if the wrong numbers go in. If a probability comes out greater than 1, or a standard deviation comes out negative, that is a sign a number was mistyped, not a strange result to write down and move past.
None of these are difficult to fix individually. What makes them expensive is that they are invisible to the student making them — which is what a second pair of eyes, in a small batch in Sector 12, is for.
