BCA mathematics has a reputation among students for being unreasonable. It is not, but it is genuinely different from school maths, and nobody says so out loud. Students revise it the way they revised class 12, and are surprised when that does not work. Here is what actually earns the marks.
- Understand the real difference: computing versus justifying.
In class 12, a correct final answer is usually worth most of the marks. In a discrete mathematics paper, a correct final answer with no reasoning can be worth very little — and a wrong final answer with sound reasoning can be worth most of the marks.
Students who can do the mathematics still lose marks, because they write down only the answer. That is a habit twelve years of school built, and BCA papers mark against it.
- Learn the four-part shape every proof question wants.
- State what you are assuming and what you intend to show. One line.
- Name the method. Induction, contradiction, direct, counterexample. One line.
- Do the work, one step per line, with the reason for each step written next to it.
- Say that you are done, and what you have shown.
Steps one, two and four take thirty seconds and hold a large share of the marks. Students skip them because they feel like padding — they are not padding. They are the answer.
- Do not skip set theory and logic. They are not the warm-up.
They look easy, they come first, and so they get read once and put aside. Relations, functions and graph theory all quietly assume you can move between a set description, a diagram and a truth table. The difficulty that appears later is usually this gap, not the new topic.
- Practise writing proofs, not reading them.
The single most useful thing you can do is write out a proof you already understand, from memory, without looking. It is uncomfortable, and it shows immediately how much of “I understand this” was recognition rather than recall.
